Chicago School Board Election Recap

The Chicago Board of Education has the beginning of an elected school board. Ten members were elected on November 5 to the new hybrid board. These members will take office in January 2025.

In the general election, 1,006,314 people voted, 67.14 % of the electorate. In the school board elections, 796,621 voted, or 79.2% of all general election voters. The vote totals showed that a mixed bag of those elected either supported CTU, Charter, and or were independent. Mayor Johnson will appoint another ten members to the board as well as the board president. These members appointed by Johnson may be on the present board or new members.

In the meantime, the present board will be negotiating with the Chicago Teachers Union for a new contract and will also approve a new budget. The present school board budget is approximately $300 million in debt. Many people have asked that these items wait until the new board is sworn in January 2025.

LWV Chicago’s Schools Committee will be monitoring school board issues, following the school board meetings and reporting to the public.
