Statement on President Biden’s Affirmation of the ERA

The League of Women Voters of Chicago commends President Biden for declaring that the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) has met all constitutional requirements to be the 28th Amendment and for affirming that gender equality is a fundamental right that belongs in the U.S. Constitution. His statement aligns with the overwhelming will of the American people and the work of generations of activists who have fought tirelessly to ensure equal protections under the law.

The president’s affirmation is supported by the country’s top constitutional scholars and the American Bar Association, who have all recognized that the ERA has met every constitutional requirement. Furthermore, hundreds of pro-equality organizations, representing millions of individuals, called on President Biden to make this declaration. This action reflects the will of the vast majority of Americans who believe in and demand gender equality. 

For the first time in American history, the promise of true equality under the law is here. This decision carries the potential to shape a future where no one is denied their full rights or dignity based on their gender.

Let us take this moment to reflect on what publication of the ERA means for the generations to come. How beautiful it is to think of the children of America growing up in a country where equality is not just an ideal but a reality—enshrined and protected in our Constitution. They will have the chance to live in a society that truly values liberty and justice for all.
