Remembering President Jimmy Carter

The League of Women Voters of Chicago joins the nation in mourning the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. President Carter's unwavering commitment to human rights, equality, and American democracy has left an indelible mark on our nation and the world.

Throughout his presidency from 1977 to 1981, Carter placed human rights at the forefront of U.S. foreign policy, emphasizing the importance of justice and equality on a global scale. His administration was notable for its efforts to diversify the federal judiciary, appointing a record number of women and people of color to lifetime positions, thereby promoting a more inclusive legal system. His personal integrity and moral leadership transcended partisan divides, earning him respect across the political spectrum. Tributes to the late president have come from across the political spectrum, including President-elect Donald Trump, who remarked, "The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude."

President Carter's dedication to women's rights was profound. He actively supported the Equal Rights Amendment and, in 1980, proclaimed August 26 as Women's Equality Day, urging all Americans to "rekindle the spirit of early Suffragists" and advance the cause of human rights through gender equality.

The League of Women Voters had the honor of engaging with President Carter during his tenure. Notably, the League sponsored the presidential debates in 1976, providing a platform for candidates, including then-Governor Carter, to present their visions for America's future.

In his post-presidential years, President Carter continued to work tirelessly for the causes of peace, democracy, and human rights across the world. His advocacy for women's rights remained a centerpiece of these efforts, exemplified by initiatives aimed at ending discrimination and violence against women worldwide.

President Carter's legacy is a testament to the profound impact that principled leadership and a steadfast commitment to equality can have on society. We can all take inspiration from his example as we continue the work of building a more just democracy for all.
