A Change of Mindset

If you were asked, “What is the biggest change you have made toward living more sustainably?” what would you answer? Would you point to your reusable shopping bags and refillable beverage container? Share the benefits of composting? Highlight your greener diet? Show off your vintage jeans?

These are all wonderful examples amongst hundreds of possible habit changes humanity is starting to adopt in the growing interest in a sustainable lifestyle. (Did you hear that the Chicago Marathon and the United Center have made the transition to canned water?)

But if you really think about it, the most important change you have made is adopting a new mindset, a sustainability mindset. You’re learning to question things you used to take for granted. And once you have made one change and see the benefits, it becomes easier and easier to adopt more ways to make more change.

And that is the secret to a big impact for our planet.

For those of you who haven’t started on this journey…Are you ready?

To give you a jump start, the Environmental Action Committee invites you to view our Tips and Tricks for Sustainable Living. We suggest you start with just one thing, then once you succeed (and you will!) try another thing, then another. Once you have made a habit out of the three or four things you have tried, tackle a room or an activity. The most important thing is to choose something you will enjoy trying that does not feel hard to accomplish. The ‘hard stuff’ won’t feel so hard once you have committed to making change.

Join the Environmental Action Committee as we work to justly affect climate change with the ultimate goal of preserving democracy by maintaining the health of our one and only planet and all that lives on it. Email us at environment@lwvchicago.org for access to our next meeting.
